Development, Construction, Secondary Plans and Studies

The Municipality is always working on various construction projects on our roads and in our parks so that residents can enjoy a high quality of life. What is not as noticeable are the studies undertaken behind the scenes, which guide the Municipality in its decision-making. Throughout the year, we host Public Information Centres to present community design plans, concepts, and other drawings to Clarington residents outlining proposed improvements to areas around Clarington.

As our community grows, municipal staff work hard to assist and facilitate sustainable development and construction, including applications for land use development and change. Learn more about the current development proposals in your neighbourhood.

Economic development projects

The following projects will help facilitate more opportunities for economic growth in Clarington.

Port Granby Project

The Port Granby Project is part of the Government of Canada's Port Hope Area Initiative (PHAI). The goal is to clean up historic low-level radioactive waste found in the Municipalities of Clarington and Port Hope.

Darlington refurbishment

The Darlington nuclear station produces about 20 per cent of Ontario's electricity. Ontario Power Generation is working on the mid-life refurbishment of the station, which will extend the life of the station by 30 years.

The first of four units to be refurbished was returned to service in June 2020. Work on refurbishing the second unit (Unit 3) is underway and targeted for completion in early 2024. Ontario Power Generation hopes to complete the refurbishment project by 2025.
