The NFPA and fire departments across North America, including Clarington Emergency & Fire Services, are working together to remind everyone that home fires are more prevalent in winter than in any other season. This is due in part to an increase in cooking and heating fires. Holiday decorations and winter storms that can interrupt electrical service and cause people to turn to alternative heating sources also contribute to the increased risk of fire in winter. Winter fires can be prevented!
The following fire safety tips can help you maintain a fire-safe home this
winter season.
The 17th annual Clarington Junior Fire Fighter program will be hosted by Clarington Emergency and Fire Services this summer. This camp is open to children aged 10 and 11 years who are Clarington residents who have not attended the camp previously. It provides the children with an opportunity to spend a week at the fire station, learning about fire fighting and fire safety. The camp is a week in duration and there are five weeks of camp, starting Monday July 11, 2011.
The Junior Firefighter Camp starts daily at 8:30 pm sharp and finishes at 3:00 pm. Daily activities include a variety of educational sessions, games and activities. Junior Firefighters should be dressed for the weather each day as the camp continues RAIN OR SHINE. There will be guest speakers joining us at the camp each week speaking about various safety topics. Junior firefighters are to bring a nut-free lunch Monday – Thursday. There will be a one day field trip explained in your acceptance package. Permission forms will be forwarded to you and are to be returned on the first day of camp. Friday is the graduation day and the ‘Firefighter Challenge’ will be on between the four crews. Graduation certificates will be presented at this time and lunch provided for the campers prior to the challenge event. Parents/Caregivers are encouraged to attend the graduation ceremony.
