GTA Clean Air Council
Introduction
The Greater
Toronto Clean Air Council (GTA-CAC) is an inter-governmental
working group with a mission to reduce smog and smog
emissions across the GTA. Formed in response to the
recognition of the adverse human and environmental
impacts of smog and widespread public concern, the
GTA-CAC has been meeting since the 2000 Smog Summit.
One of the key goals of the GTA-CAC is to develop
smog reduction strategies which can then be implemented
by the various jurisdictions which make-up the GTA.
Initial members of the GTA-CAC included the Government
of Canada, Province of Ontario and the City of Toronto.
Since then, additional jurisdictions have joined the
GTA-CAC in an effort to combat smog throughout the
GTA.
Since the 2000 Smog Summit and in an effort to raise
public awareness and political commitment to improving
air quality, the GTA-CAC continues to hold annual
Smog Summits.
To date, the GTA-CAC has been successful in identifying
and approving various initiatives which have allowed
GTA-CAC members to develop clean air policies through
collective action with the goal of improving air quality.
Improved air quality will benefit human and environmental
health throughout the GTA.
