CLARINGTON COMES TO THE DARK SIDE...
See the difference YOU can make

Earth Hour 2007 was a Sydney event.
Earth Hour 2008 is a global movement.

CLARINGTON (February 14, 2008) On Saturday, March 29, 2008, from 8:00 - 9:00 PM, Clarington will join Copenhagen, Toronto, Chicago, Melbourne, Brisbane, Tel Aviv and other communities around the world to turn out all non-essential lights for one hour beginning at 8 PM.

Earth Hour began as an initiative involving WWF-Australia, Fairfax Media and Leo Burnett for the City of Sydney. The intent is to have the event adopted by other residents, communities, businesses and governments around the world so they, too, can demonstrate that individual actions on a mass scale can help change our planet for the better.

The 2007 event was a huge success with more than 2 million people participating, resulting in a 10% drop in the electricity grid (the target was 5%). This reduction saved 25,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide - the equivalent of keeping 50,000 cars off the road for one hour!

The Living Green Committee invites the community to participate in this initiative and encourages all residents, businesses, and community organizations to register.  Take the challenge and challenge your family and friends, regardless of where they live, to do the same. Together we can make a significant impact in reducing the effects of global warming.

What can you do?  First.... THINK BIG!  Think dark!  Getting your friends and neighbourhood involved is the easiest way to be a part of Earth Hour and help make a difference to our planet. Register yourself, your family, your business, and/or your community group at www.earthhour.org.

Beyond the obvious positive environmental impacts, think about the aesthetic benefits.  Bring your friends and family together for the night.  Go outside and look at the stars.  When was the last time you saw the Big Dipper?  Or, perhaps you might plan a romantic candlelight picnic with your significant other.  Or, a block party with your neighbours. Be creative and have fun!
