CENTRAL LAKE ONTARIO CONSERVATION

FLOOD MANAGEMENT

Watershed Conditions Statement – Water Safety

Date/Time: June 24, 2019   3:30 PM

Subject: Notice of Hazardous Creek Conditions

The Central Lake Ontario Conservation Authority advises that Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement forecasting locally heavy rain. Showers and thunderstorms are set to develop in the late evening and into the overnight. Localized heavy rainfall in the amount of 35- 45mm is possible before the thunderstorms leave the area late tonight.

Significant rainfall amounts will potentially result in increased flows, and higher than normal water levels in all our creeks and streams, resulting in dangerous flow conditions especially in the vicinity of culverts and bridges.

In addition, residents are reminded that there is currently a Lake Ontario shoreline flood warning still in effect. Higher than average lake levels combined with significant rainfall and forecast southerly winds may produce storm surge and wave uprush along the shoreline causing flooding.

The Central Lake Ontario Conservation Authority is asking all residents to stay away from all watercourses and structures such as bridges, culverts and dams.  Elevated water levels, fast flows, and slippery conditions along stream banks continue to make these locations extremely dangerous.  Children should be warned to stay away from all watercourses and ponds.

This Watershed Conditions Statement – Water Safety will be in effect through to June 26, 2019.  The Central Lake Ontario Conservation Authority will continue to monitor the conditions of the streams and creeks and will provide updates as required.

For further information, please contact Holly Whittington, Flood Duty Officer at (905) 579-0411 ext 134.

Note:   A Watershed Conditions Statement – Water Safety is a general notice that potential conditions exist that poses a risk to personal safety.  High flows, unsafe banks, melting ice or other factors that could be dangerous for recreational users such as anglers, canoeists, hikers, children, pets, etc. Flooding is not expected.
