Clarington November 6, 2017- Ontario’s Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, the Honourable Jeff Leal, met with members of the Agricultural Advisory Committee of Clarington last Thursday. Minister Leal was invited by committee members to come to a scheduled meeting and discuss agricultural issues facing Clarington farmers.

Minister Leal addressed a variety of issues. He reiterated the importance of the agri-food sector and the essential role it plays in Ontario’s economy.

“I would like to thank the Clarington Agricultural Advisory Committee for the opportunity to meet and share ideas on how we can work together to support the continued growth of Clarington’s vital farm and food sector,” said Jeff Leal, Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs.

“We had a productive discussion with the minister and are pleased that he took the time to listen to our concerns,” said Brenda Metcalf, Chair of the Agricultural Advisory Committee of Clarington. “The Agricultural Advisory Committee addressed many issues facing local farmers. We had the opportunity to ask questions and solicit feedback from the minister.”

The Agricultural Advisory Committee was established by Clarington Council to advise and make recommendations to municipal leaders on agriculture and related issues. The committee is made up of volunteer members who meet monthly to discuss agricultural goals, objectives and policies related to rural issues with a municipal focus.

“Agriculture is Clarington’s leading industry. Our farmers are responsible for growing and producing food that thousands of Ontarians consume. We are happy to welcome Minister Leal to the community to discuss ways to support this critical sector,” said Clarington Mayor Adrian Foster.
