Cedar Crest Beach Update #22

Posted on Thursday June 01, 2017

Update # 22
Cedar Crest Beach Flooding
Issued: June 1, 2017
Time: 3:45 p.m.

Clarington/- Clarington Operations crews have been assessing West Beach Road to ensure its integrity; additional gravel has been added to minimize flooding effects. Operations staff are continuing to open the marsh outfall to make sure marsh levels are kept as low as possible.

Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry (MNRF) staff continue to assist with building sandbags on site. Staff from Operations and MNRF have helped residents to place sandbags around their homes. MNRF is dispatching three new crews of staff to assist. They will arrive tomorrow.

The Ontario Provincial Disaster Assessment Team (PDAT) arrived today at Cedar Crest Beach. PDAT is collecting information from residents and assessing the extent of damage to impacted homes in the area. This information will be used to make an informed decision on whether to activate the Disaster Recovery Assistance for Ontarians program. This program may be activated when a sudden, unexpected natural disaster causes costly and widespread damage to eligible private property. If activated, the program would offer financial assistance to help cover emergency expenses, cleanup expenses and costs to repair or replace essential property.

Clarington is asking Cedar Crest Beach and West Beach residents who have flooding concerns and issues to contact the Municipality directly. This will help us track concerns and follow up with each resident directly. Here’s how you can reach us:

  • Tel: 905-263-2291 Monday to Friday 8 a.m. until 3:30 p.m.
  • Tel: 905-623-3379 Press 7, for after hours on-call supervisor
  • Email: flood@clarington.net
  • During an Emergency dial 911

The Municipality would like to ask people who do not live in the area to refrain from visiting and keep local roads clear. Additional traffic in the area blocks roads for emergency and operations vehicles working on assisting residents.

The Municipality will continue to issue updates through our website and social media as needed.
