Update # 17

Cedar Crest Beach Flooding

Issued: May 25, 2017

Time: 8:40 p.m.

Clarington/- With wind and rain subsiding, lake effect flooding has slowed down in the Cedar Crest Beach and West Beach area. Clarington Emergency and Fire Services and Operations staff worked throughout the day helping residents sandbag around their homes. Red Cross have completed the door-to-door assessment. Currently, residents have opted to stay in their homes.

Portions of Cedar Crest Beach Road and West Beach Road are flooded. Several homes on the west side of Cedar Crest Beach Road have experienced the worst flooding. The outfall from the marsh is open, helping to drain some of the floodwaters.

The Municipality of Clarington deployed around 50 staff members, both fire crews and operations staff, who assisted residents with their sandbagging efforts throughout the day.

Clarington has been in touch with officials from the Provincial Emergency Operations Centre for assistance. Two teams of staff from the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry are set to arrive tomorrow morning to assist Clarington staff with sandbagging around homes.

With lake levels at an all-time high, Clarington is doing all it can to mitigate the effects. The Municipality is following its Emergency Plan and continues to monitor the situation. The focus of the Emergency Plan is to protect life. If the lake surge persists, some homes may be evacuated.

Environment Canada has lifted its special weather statement.

Local roads in the Cedar Crest Beach and West Beach areas are open only to residents, emergency services and municipal staff.

The Municipality will continue to issue updates through our website and social media as needed.
