Cedar Crest Beach Update # 21

Posted on Tuesday May 30, 2017

Update # 21
Cedar Crest Beach Flooding
Issued: May 30, 2017
Time: 2:30 p.m.

Clarington/- Crews from Clarington Operations are working alongside staff from the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry (MNRF) on sandbagging efforts today. They’re assisting residents at Cedar Crest Beach who continue to work on flood mitigation measures. The area has experienced flooding since April 30, 2017. With Lake Ontario levels reaching a record high and more wet weather in the forecast, residents continue to brace for potential floodwaters.

This evening, officials from Clarington Operations, Clarington Fire and Red Cross will be going door-to-door to assess the needs of residents. They will collect information from each household and determine what other flood protection measures may be needed.

The Ontario Provincial Disaster Assessment Team (PDAT) will also arrive at Cedar Crest Beach this Thursday, June 1, 2017 from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. PDAT will collect information from residents and assess the extent of damage to impacted homes in the area. This information will be used to make an informed decision on whether to activate the Disaster Recovery Assistance for Ontarians program. This program may be activated when a sudden, unexpected natural disaster causes costly and widespread damage to eligible private property. If activated, the program would offer financial assistance to help cover emergency expenses, cleanup expenses and costs to repair or replace essential property.

Clarington is asking Cedar Crest Beach and West Beach residents who have flooding concerns and issues to contact the Municipality directly. This will help us track concerns and follow up with each resident directly. Here’s how you can reach us:

  • Tel: 905-263- 2291 Monday to Friday 8 a.m. until 3:30 p.m.
  • Email: flood@clarington.net
  • Tel: 905-623-3379 press 7, for after hours on-call supervisor
  • During Emergency dial 911

The Municipality would like to ask people who do not live in the area to refrain from visiting and keep local roads clear. Additional traffic in the area blocks roads for emergency and operations vehicles working on assisting residents.

The Municipality will continue to issue updates through our website and social media as needed.
