Toronto Street, Rudell Road and Sunset Boulevard Closure
Toronto Street, Rudell Road and Sunset Boulevard Closure

The Regional Municipality of Durham is starting a construction project that includes road reconstruction, watermain installation, storm sewer and sanitary sewer improvements on Toronto Street from just north of Foster Creek to just north of the CN Rail crossing, and on Rudell Road from just south Sunset Boulevard to just north of Regional Highway 2. This project will also include micro-tunnelling under Highway 401 and the CN Rail corridor along with micro-tunnelling within the Toronto Street and Sunset Boulevard corridors. This work is being undertaken to upgrade the sanitary sewer collection system and water distribution system on the east side of Newcastle.

Construction Schedule
The Region’s contractor, North Rock Group, will mobilize their crew the week of May 13, 2019, and anticipates completing the work by July 2021. The majority of micro-tunnelling will be completed in 2019 along with the Toronto Street watermain, sanitary sewer, storm sewer and road reconstruction. Unfavourable weather conditions may influence the work schedule. Please note: construction activity such as surveyors, utility locate personnel and precondition survey will be conducted on the interior and exterior of buildings adjacent to the construction activity.

Road Closures and Lane Restrictions
Toronto Street will be closed from Milligan Street to just north of the CN tracks starting May 27 and will remain closed for the remainder of the year. Rudell Road and the west end of Sunset Boulevard will also be closed for extended periods of time allowing for local traffic only. This will be communicated at a later date in the local paper, social media and on the Region’s webpage at durham.ca/WorksProjects. Residents should expect minor delays and are asked to drive cautiously for the safety of the construction workers, cyclists and the travelling public. Access to residential driveways will be maintained whenever possible; however, a notification will be given to residents if vehicles need to be temporarily relocated out of the driveway to provide access for construction.
