New Household Special Waste Depot Opens in Bowmanville

Posted on Tuesday October 22, 2019

Whitby, Ontario - Residents of Clarington are encouraged to bring their household special waste to the new Household Special Waste Depot located at 1998 Bowmanville Avenue (Regional Road 57), free of charge beginning October 23.

The Region of Durham Works Department celebrated the official opening today with a ribbon-cutting attended by Regional Chair and Chief Executive Officer John Henry; Don Mitchell, Chair of Works Committee; Clarington Mayor Adrian Foster; and local media.

“As Clarington continues to grow, the need for Regional services also grows,” said John Henry, Regional Chair and Chief Executive Officer. “This new facility was created to better serve our residents and to help them conveniently dispose of their waste.”

“I would like to thank all the staff who worked very hard to get this facility up and running,” said Don Mitchell, Chair of Works Committee. “With Durham’s continued investment into waste management, we hope to continue to provide more and better waste disposal options to our residents.”

Cleaners, leftover paint, old batteries, motor oil, pool chemicals, sharps, unused medicine and propane tanks are part of a long list of items classified as household hazardous wastes. If not disposed of properly, they can be harmful to the environment as well as collection and facility workers. Do not put household hazardous waste in your garbage. Drop off at any of the Region’s waste management facilities for free.

When dropping off this waste:

  • Never mix substances.
  • Keep materials in their original container or in a well-marked container.
  • All containers should be sealed.
  • Securely pack materials in your vehicle to prevent spills.

Blue box and green bin sales and exchanges are available at the new Household Special Waste Depot, as well as the Waste Management Centre in Whitby, located at 4600 Garrard Road. Exchanged bins must be clean and free of waste or liquid.

This Household Special Waste Depot is open Wednesday to Sunday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., year-round. For a list of materials accepted, visit durham.ca/WMF or download the Durham Region Waste App.
