The Municipality of Clarington is competing in ParticipACTION’s Community Better Challenge from June 1 to June 30, 2021. This national contest encourages Canadians to get active and compete to win a grand prize of $100,000 for their municipality to support local initiatives that promote physical activity.

We are asking Clarington residents to help us win the prize by tracking their daily activity or ‘move’ minutes throughout June to add to our overall Municipal total. Move minutes are any time an individual engages in light or incidental physical activity, including:

  • Running, walking, hiking, wheeling or jogging
  • Yoga, pilates, or stretching
  • Canoeing, kayaking, or paddleboarding
  • Gardening, yard work, vacuuming or cleaning
  • Active play, games or sports
  • Strength training, group exercise or fitness classes
  • Dance

Remember to practise physical distancing, wear a mask and follow public health guidelines related to COVID-19 while being active.

How you can participate
To make sure your move minutes count, create a ParticipACTION account using your Clarington postal code.
  • Individuals can track their move minutes by downloading the app using Google Play Store for Android, or the App Store for iOS, or creating an online account beginning June 1.
  • Families with children under 17 can track their move minutes throughout June by creating an online account and adding each family member up to a maximum of 10 people.
  • Organizations may track move minutes for individuals who participate in their programs but cannot access the app or the website.
 More ways to help
  • Organizations and schools can register a ParticipACTION Community Better Challenge event or activity to help their community get moving.
  • Help inspire others to get involved by posting messages and videos on your social media accounts. Engage with us on Facebook or Twitter by using the hashtag #ClaringtonMovesFor100K.  Make your posts instructional, encouraging or challenge each other to track the most move minutes. Be creative and get moving.
 How the winner is calculated
The score is calculated by three things.
  1. The number of people who are participating in your community and tracking minutes for themselves and their family on the ParticipACTION app or website
  2. The number of organizations who are participating in your community and tracking activity such as Phys Ed. Class, basketball practice, or local fun-runs that they organize.
  3. The total minutes tracked by individuals and organizations.

The score is adjusted to factor in the community’s total population, so both large and small communities have an equal chance of winning.
