Animal Adoption

Photo Gallery: Animal Services will appear here on the public site.

Animal Shelter now open

The Clarington Animal Shelter is now open Monday to Friday, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., to purchase animal licences and drop off adoption applications. If you have a stray/unwanted animal, please contact the Animal Shelter to arrange a time to bring it in.

To adopt an animal, fill out an online application with the animal ID/name of the animal you would like to adopt. We will contact you to discuss the animal’s needs, personality and ideal forever home. A video of the animal may be provided. Before you arrive to pick up your adopted pet, you will be required to set a date and time, and the handover will be contactless. Please call the animal shelter when you arrive to allow for COVID-19 screening before you enter the shelter. No entry is allowed past the locked doors in the lobby unless an appointment is made to visit an animal and your application is approved. Only one member of the household may attend a meet and greet.

Adoption hours are Monday to Friday, from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Saturday, from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Adoption fees

Adopt a dog: $95
Adopt a cat: $130

If cats/kittens are too young to be spayed or neutered, we will provide a $75 rebate certificate once the  owner provides proof of the spay or neuter within 120 days of the adoption date.

Both cats and dogs will be micro-chipped and have their first vaccine. You will also receive a free Clarington municipal pet licence.

Use the adoption search tool below to find pets at the Animal Shelter that are available for adoption. Please include the animal ID on your adoption application. Applications can only be submitted for animals at the Animal Shelter. We do not keep applications on file.

Meet and greet

We encourage all family members, including dogs, to participate in the meet and greet portion of the adoption process to ensure your chosen pet is the right fit for the entire family. Once you meet the dog of interest, you can bring your dog for a second visit.

Featured Pet

My name is Chester, and I am looking for a new home. I was in rough shape when I came into the shelter and have been through quite the ordeal. I was caught in a humane cat trap and was in need of help. The Animal Shelter has cared for me, cleaned me up and given me medication to heal. I was also neutered and vaccinated. While I still have issues with people touching me, I am getting used to it with the help of treats. I mostly just want to hang out and watch what everyone is doing around me. I will need some time to adjust. I definitely would not do well in a home with kids ‚Äď the noise is too scary. I am looking for someone with a lot of patience to give me a nice home without expectations.
