Nash Road rehabilitation and widening

The Municipality of Clarington is planning to rehabilitate and widen Nash Road from Hancock Road to Solina Road in Courtice in summer 2021. The existing pavement has reached the end of its service life and needs to be replaced. Drainage improvements need to be made to allow for the wider road design.

Nash Road has become a popular cycling route in the community, connecting Courtice to Bowmanville, and Clarington is looking to widen the road to allow for dedicated bicycle lanes. Highway 2 lacks east/west cycling infrastructure, and the Waterfront Trail within Courtice is currently disconnected, so the Municipality is looking to make Nash Road an integral part of the Municipality’s future Active Transportation Master Plan.

The proposed work includes:

  • Widening of the road west of the Highway 418 corridor to accommodate dedicated cycling lanes
  • Rehabilitation of the road east of the Highway 418 corridor to replace the pavement surface and widen the road to accommodate dedicated bicycle lanes
  • Improved drainage that is directed toward roadside ditches to prevent water from draining onto private properties
  • Creating designated bicycle lanes with line painting, symbols, and signage
  • Utility relocations to allow for the proposed wider road design

The proposed reconstruction design will avoid potential impacts to private properties fronting Nash Road as much as possible; however, local driveway aprons will be affected. The Municipality will reinstate the driveway aprons to existing condition or better.
