2017 Family Safety Day

Clarington Emergency and Fire Services' Mobile Cooling Centre

Clarington Emergency and Fire Services collaborated with Durham Regional Police Services, Ontario Power Generation and Kelsey’s for the 17th annual Family Safety Day event. The day was full of free fun-filled activities and opportunities to learn how to stay safe in our homes and neighbourhoods.

Detective Constable Wayne King and police dog Rogue, gave an informative presentation about the canine unit, what they do and how they work in our communities.

Another highlight was the live burn demonstration. Using a burn box, firefighters set two identical living rooms on fire. The crowd watched as each room went up in flames and saw the difference a sprinkler system makes in a home during a fire. After only a few minutes, the burn boxes were up in flames and firefighters intervened to put them out emphasizing the need to exit your home as soon as you hear a smoke alarm.

Durham Regional Police also displayed their Air-1 Helicopter, which landed at Family Safety Day in the morning. It stayed all day, giving kids the opportunity to look inside and talk to the pilot and navigator. It took off at 2 p.m. while the crowd waved and cheered.

Family Safety Day was a great day for all who attended. Clarington Emergency and Fire Services would like to thank their event sponsors Durham Regional Police Services, Ontario Power Generation and Kelsey’s.  They would also like to thank the volunteers and those who hosted a booth, and those who came out with their families. We hope to see you again next year.
