Clarington cancels its Canada Day event, looks at other ways to celebrate Canada’s birthday

Clarington April 20, 2020- The Municipality of Clarington has made the difficult decision to cancel its Canada Day celebration held at Garnet B. Rickard Recreation Complex.

“We are following Public Health guidelines set out for the COVID-19 pandemic. This was an incredibly difficult decision to make, as we all need a reason to celebrate this year,” said Clarington Mayor Adrian Foster.

With a Provincial Order in place that bans public gatherings of more than five people, the Municipality is following physical distancing rules and cancelling this event. Clarington staff are looking at alternate options to help unite our community and still celebrate Canada’s birthday. As the Federal Government is currently planning a large virtual event, Clarington is looking at different ways to celebrate and add to those plans, providing some variety for our community.

“Staff are looking at different scenarios and possibilities for a celebration. Once we have a plan in place, we will be sharing all of the details with our community,” said George Acorn, Director of Community Services.

“While celebrations may be more muted this year, our community spirit will shine,” added Mayor Foster.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, all Municipally-run events are cancelled until July 3. Decisions on future events will be made based on the advice of Public Health officials and following Provincially-mandated emergency orders.

A new plan for Clarington’s Canada Day celebration will be released shortly on the Municipality’s social media and our website.
