Clarington is creating a facilities development strategy to grow and expand recreation facilities

Clarington September 16, 2015/- The Municipality of Clarington’s Community Services Department is creating a facilities development strategy. The strategy will serve as a framework for the future of indoor recreation facilities in Clarington until 2031.

To meet the needs of an ever-growing and diverse population, Clarington is looking to create a plan that includes the expansion of our existing facilities and development of new recreation facilities. “We want to provide the best indoor recreation space and services that are accessible and meet the needs of all the members of our community,” said Joseph Caruana, Director of Community Services. “To that end, we need to develop this strategy so that our facilities are able to grow and support our residents,” added Director Caruana.

The first phase of strategy development involves community engagement. Clarington will hold four separate Public Information Centres to solicit public opinion and thoughts regarding a strategy. The Municipality wants to hear from residents about the current state of our indoor facilities, what is lacking and what needs improvement?

The four Public Information Centres will be held in:
Courtice on Sept. 23, 2015 at Courtice Community Complex
Bowmanville on Sept. 24, 2015 at Garnet B. Rickard Recreation Complex
Orono on Sept. 28, 2015 at the Orono Arena
Newcastle on Sept. 29, 2015 at Newcastle & District Recreation Complex

All members of Council will be asked to provide input into the strategy to ensure that it meets their overall vision and plan for recreation within Clarington. The strategy is an ongoing process that will take a few months to develop. Community Services will provide a report to Council that includes a strategy for approval early in 2016.
