Protecting the Jury Lands and Camp 30 from damage
Clarington is looking at different options to protect the historical Jury Lands Camp 30 area from damage caused by vehicles trespassing on the property and four-wheelers tearing up the land. Council has directed Municipal Public Works staff to immediately clear the ditch that borders the property along Lambs Road and to use the excavated material to construct a berm to prevent trespassing and illegal entry. Public Works will also be investigating the cost of placing large boulders along the property line to help prevent trespassing. The cost of this work will be assessed through the 2022 Budget process in January.

New development on Prestonvale Road and Bloor Street in Courtice moving forward
A new development on the northeast corner of Prestonvale Road and Bloor Street will be moving forward with the construction of 112 townhomes. Council approved a staff report giving permission for the Holding “H” symbol to be removed from the property in question. Under the Municipal Planning Act, municipalities can add an “H” symbol to an area that will be used for future development until certain conditions of development are met. These conditions include infrastructure and servicing support, access, protection of natural areas, measures to mitigate the impact of development, submission of required studies, execution of agreements and financial obligations and anything else deemed necessary. The developer for the project in Courtice has met all conditions and provisions and can move ahead with the next steps. The subdivision and site plan approval for the development have now been finalized. The developer has started to install underground services and private lanes and will be applying for building permits in the coming months.

Environmental stewardship: Clarington works on climate mitigation while beautifying our community
Clarington’s environmental stewardship program provided funding for the Trees for Rural Roads initiative in 2021, which saw 860 tree saplings and 10 shrubs planted along our rural roads. The stewardship program is designed to encourage and support residents and groups to carry out an initiative to improve our community lands, including valley lands and natural areas. The program is much more than just a beautifying, aesthetic initiative; it contributes to climate mitigation, preservation of historical landscapes, education, research, and community engagement. Clarington’s Trees for Rural Roads initiative began in 2012 as a partnership between the Municipality and Central Lake Ontario Conservation Authority (CLOCA) and Ganaraska Region Conservation Authority (GRCA). Since then, the Trees for Rural Roads initiative has provided 7,404 trees and 60 shrubs to 299 different property owners across rural Clarington.
