Clarington, Ontario – The Municipality of Clarington is pleased to announce the start of our spring recreation programs and activities. Registration begins on March 10, and we hope that residents participate in an 'active March' with our safe, affordable and reliable programs.
We are reintroducing drop-in adult leisure skating programs beginning on March 2; with flex registration, participants can sign up weekly. Adult leisure skates will be available every Tuesday, Thursday and Friday at South Courtice Arena for those 18 years and older. Participants must pre-register in advance to book a skate time. Registration opens each Thursday at 9 a.m. for the following Friday through Thursday. Change rooms remain closed, but chairs will be provided for tying skates.
In addition, Clarington is offering some popular programs this spring, including our Parent & Child Preschool Programs such as ABCs 123s, It's a Spring Thing, Lil' Artists, Dino Discoverers, and Path 2 Math. These programs require parent participation and are geared for children aged two to four years old. It's a great way to get out of the house and socialize in a COVID-19-safe environment. Clarington is also offering child and youth programs, including Virtual Home Alone, Virtual Babysitting, Active Play, Fit Kids, Virtual Parent & Child Tasty Critter Creations, STEAM Club, and Soccer Kicks.
Our Active Adult 55+ programs are also back. With a mix of in-person and virtual programs focused on fitness, general interest, recreation and social activities, we can help to keep your schedule full. This spring, we offer virtual geocaching. The first class is virtual. After that, you head outdoors using an App to find hidden containers known as "caches" in various locations across Clarington. Also new is a virtual tour of Algoma Orchard. Join co-owner Kirk Kemp to learn the history of the Orchard and make freshly pressed cider. Our outdoor fitness classes are back with Walk Fit, Zumba Gold, Urban Pole Walking and 55+ Bootcamp; we will keep you active.
For those residents looking to connect with others and participate in safe group activities, Clarington is offering group fitness classes. Join virtual, indoor and outdoor classes, including Stroller Fit and Learn to Run.
"Our recreation team has been busy diversifying our programs and coming up with new and unique ways to bring virtual fun to residents' homes," said Stephen Myers, Recreation Services Manager. "We are excited to reintroduce some of our popular in-person programming and combine that with virtual options as we continue to navigate this COVID-19 pandemic.”
The Municipality has partnered with the Clarington Public Library to create themed activity kits for families to complete at home each week. These fun kits are geared for children aged five to nine years old. Participants must register for a kit on our BeActive website. Clarington has also introduced Virtual Scientists in School Workshops. These fun, interactive workshops explore different scientific topics and allow children to experiment as they learn. Participants must register for each workshop and pick up the corresponding activity materials. Register for a workshop online on our BeActive website.
"As pandemic restrictions start to lift, I hope more residents return to our trusted, safe and cost-effective programs," said Clarington Mayor Adrian Foster.
