Trees for Rural Roads Program wraps up for 2022 with nearly 8,000 trees planted over the decade
Year 10 of the Trees for Rural Roads Program was wrapped up on Saturday, April 23, 2022, with the annual tree handout event. Thirty-five rural property owners took home 558 native tree saplings for planting along rural roads in Clarington. Since the start of the program in 2012, 7,902 native trees and 60 native shrubs have been distributed.
Clarington’s Trees for Rural Roads Program helps to restore our historical rural roadside tree canopy and the natural beauty of our rural landscapes. The program is an important contributor to replacing century-old trees throughout the Municipality that are dying from old age, exposure to extreme wind and storm events, insects, and disease. The program supports tree canopy restoration and wildlife habitat, climate change mitigation, local history preservation and community engagement.
The Trees for Rural Roads Program is delivered in partnership with the Central Lake Ontario and Ganaraska Region Conservation Authorities, funding partners, and the Public Works and Community Services Departments. For more information, visit www.clarington.net/TreesforRuralRoads or contact Amy Burke in the Planning and Development Services Department at aburke@clarington.net or 905-623-3379 ext. 2423.
