The Municipality of Clarington is a dynamic, rapidly growing municipality east of Toronto in the Regional Municipality of Durham. Clarington encompasses the urban areas of Courtice, Bowmanville, Newcastle Village and Orono.

The successful candidate must be available for the full employment period from May 3, 2021, through to September 3, 2021.

Qualifications

The successful candidate will have:

  1. Preferably completed at least two years within a Planning Program at a university and be a student member of OPPI. 
  2. Sound writing and communication skills.
  3. Proficiency in working with Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word, as well as knowledge of Geographic Information Systems (GIS), and database programs.
  4. Land use planning knowledge and skills.
  5. Must be able to work in Canada legally.

Responsibilities

Under the supervision of the Manager of Special Projects, this position will be predominantly working as part of a team updating the Municipality’s zoning by-law.  Tasks may include:

  • Researching emerging zoning issues and approaches of other municipalities;
  • Assisting with the development of public information and resources;
  • Compiling relevant land development data for analysis; and
  • Supporting grid-level review of mapping and QA/QC protocols.

Other tasks that the successful candidate will undertake include:

  • Updating of development tracking systems and inventories;
  • Conduct site visits, research in preparation of drafting of the annual Growth Trends Review report; and
  • Assistance with planning application files and other day-to-day tasks.

Rate of Pay: $17.55 per hour (35 hour work week)

This position will be subject to verbal and written tests, and the highest overall score will be considered in the determination of the successful applicant.

The successful candidate must provide, at their own expense:

  • Valid Ontario Driver’s Licence
  • Current Driver’s Abstract 
  • Proof of current automobile insurance
  • A satisfactory criminal reference check (CPIC), from a Canadian Police Information Centre, before commencing employment. Applicants who have been employed with the Municipality within the last year and have provided a CPIC within the last 365 days are exempt.
