To care for abandoned cemeteries in Clarington.

Composition

  • Board members appointed for the same term as Council.
  • Seven community members plus one Council representative
  • One staff support (Municipal Clerk or designate)

Frequency of meetings

As required, typically once per year, on a Saturday at 10 a.m.

Most of the work is "hands on" taking care of the cemeteries.

History

The Clarke Pioneer Cemetery Board was formed in the 1960's by the Clarke Township Council. The Board was formed in response to a request by the Ministry of Municipal Affairs to clean up overgrown sites and erect cairns in abandoned cemeteries throughout the Township. There are 19 abandoned cemeteries in the former Clarke Township.

There are 14 abandoned cemeteries in the former Darlington Township.

Note: The Board does not maintain all 33 abandoned cemeteries.
