Clarington waives property tax penalties for residents and businesses for 60 days

To help residents and business owners struggling to cope with the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Municipality of Clarington is easing the tax burden. Clarington Council has decided to waive tax penalties and interest for 60 days, starting with the April instalment.

The two-month penalty relief will be effective on the April instalment, with no penalties or interest charged in May or June. In addition, Clarington will also waive any service fees for residents who have insufficient funds or who wish to adjust their pre-authorized payments. Residents who wish to change the schedule for their pre-authorized payments are asked to call the Tax Department at 905-623-3379 ext. 2650 or email

Postdated Cheques

Property tax payments made by postdated cheque will be processed unless the Tax Department receives a written request to hold the payment. Please contact the Tax Department at 905-623-3379 ext. 2650  or

Instalment due dates

Property tax bills are issued twice each year with two instalments each for a total of four payments. The instalment due dates for 2020 are:

Properties enrolled in our monthly pre-authorized payment plan will receive only a final tax bill each year. Your final tax bill will state any changes to your monthly withdrawal amount to take effect from July 1 to November 1, as well as provide your December 1 withdrawal amount for the upcoming year.

Property owners who have a mortgage company making payment on their behalf will receive only a final tax bill each year.

Supplementary tax bills

Supplementary tax bills, which represent additional assessment on your property determined by the Municipal Property Assessment Corporation (MPAC), are sent out monthy from July to November.

The Assessment Act gives MPAC authority to correct any missed assessment for the current year plus up to two years prior. Homeowners will receive notification directly from MPAC prior to receiving tax information from the Municipality.
