Isotope production

The recently refurbished Unit 1 reactor at Ontario Power Generation’s (OPG) Darlington Nuclear is now producing critical life-saving Cobalt-60 isotopes for the world. This medical isotope is used to sterilize 40% of the world’s single-use medical devices, as well as certain food products.

OPG plans to modify Darlington’s three other units to produce these isotopes as well, helping secure a stable, reliable global supply. Additional key isotopes include Molybdenum-99, a much-needed medical isotope used in over 30 million procedures a year to detect illnesses like cancer and heart disease; Helium-3, a rare isotope used in quantum computing, neutron research, border security and medical imaging; and Tritium, used in the production of self-powered lights and medical research.

As part of the Central and Eastern Ontario Isotope Alliance,  Clarington aims to unite Ontario’s isotope community and foster future opportunities to leverage the region’s strengths and assets.

Darlington New Nuclear Project (DNNP)

In 2023, the Ontario government announced its collaboration with Ontario Power Generation to begin planning and licensing four small modular reactors (SMRs) at the Darlington Nuclear site. The construction and operation of these four 300 MW SMRs in Clarington will create and sustain 2,600 jobs, add $13.7 billion to Ontario’s GDP, and produce reliable power for 1.2 million people.

Darlington refurbishment

OPG’s world-class Darlington Refurbishment, a $12.8 billion project, contributes to the creation of approximately 14,200 jobs per year over 10 years. As the refurbishment project continues to progress on time and on budget, it will secure 3,500 megawatts of reliable, low-cost, and emissions-free power for an additional 30 years.

Darlington Nuclear Generating Station produces 20 per cent of Ontario’s electricity supply. The world’s largest tritium removal facility is in Clarington, leading the way in nuclear safety and environmental protection.

Clarington is a founding member of the Canadian Association of Nuclear Host Communities, a not-for-profit association that supports current and future nuclear host communities in fostering proactive relationships with the nuclear industry and regulators.
