Clarington, Ontario – The Municipality of Clarington has received $58,760 to enhance accessibility in our parks and along our outdoor nature trails by installing charging stations for mobility devices, including scooters and powered wheelchairs. The Clarington Charges Forward initiative is funded in part by a grant from the Inclusive Communities program awarded by the Ministry of Seniors and Accessibility. The program was designed to ‘strengthen communities and provide local opportunities for older adults and people with disabilities,’ as outlined by the Ministry.
“Having charging stations in our parks and along our trails provides people who use mobility devices with peace of mind and ensures they can maintain a charge for the duration of their outdoor activity,” explained Clarington’s Accessibility Coordinator, Jeannette Whynot.
The Municipality will work with its Accessibility Advisory Committee, Active Transportation and Safe Roads Committee, Municipal staff and the public to determine the placement of the charging stations at up to eight locations.
“During the pandemic, more people have taken advantage of Clarington’s outdoor amenities. It is important that we build an inclusive community, allowing all of our residents the opportunity to enjoy our parks and trails without worrying about the battery limitations of their assistive devices,” said Clarington Mayor Adrian Foster.
The Inclusive Communities Grant was created in November 2020 and supports initiatives that focus on the physical and social dimensions that “contribute to independent and active living for older adults and people with disabilities,” as outlined by the Ministry.
