Whether it’s clearing snow from your sidewalk, parking wisely, or giving snowplows plenty of space, a little effort from everyone can make a big difference in keeping Clarington safe and accessible this winter.
Municipal Sidewalk Snow-Removal |
To help improve accessibility in our community, Clarington launched a new municipal sidewalk snow-clearing program in the 2023-24 winter season. Clarington crews will now be responsible for plowing and salting sidewalks on primary routes, pedestrian crossovers, and school crossings. The sidewalks selected for this program are located on arterial roads—or main routes—identified in downtown and high-traffic areas that people would typically use to travel within the main areas of the community. Property owners are still required to maintain sidewalks and clear windrows under Clarington’s snow-clearing by-law. As we implement this new service across Clarington, we thank residents for their patience and understanding. |
Report a Winter Road Maintenance Emergency |
Report winter road maintenance emergencies like drifting snow, icy roads or downed trees by calling 905-623-3379 ext. 2661. For after-hours road emergencies, please call Oshawa Fire Dispatch at 905-433-1234. You can also report non-emergency concerns through the Service Clarington portal. |
Weight Restrictions |
The 2024 weight restrictions for roads under the Municipality of Clarington's jurisdiction will end on April 2. Signs will remain on municipal roads where weight restrictions apply year-round. View the weight restriction map (PDF). When weight restrictions are in effect, vehicle loads are restricted to five (5) tonnes per axle in accordance with the provisions of the Highway Traffic Act R.S.O. 1990, cH8, s122. Please note that weight restrictions for roads under the Region of Durham jurisdiction may also change at any time. Please contact the Region of Durham for details on their weight restrictions. |
Winter Parking |
Parking on the street in the winter months can interrupt or prevent effective snow clearing operations. Snow plow operators clear snow as close to the curb as possible (or end of travelled portion of roadway where no curb exists), but road obstructions, like parked vehicles, prevent this task from being completed.
If you park on the street and interfere with snow clearing operations, your vehicle may be ticketed and towed. Parking on the street during a snow event can slow down snow clearing operations, and in some cases, it can stop all snow clearing on that street. |
Winter Road Maintenance |
The Municipality of Clarington is responsible for road maintenance during winter months to ensure the safety of all of our residents. Our crews are responsible for plowing snow and laying down sand or salt for icy conditions on 892 kilometres of Municipal roads, or around 1,800 lane kilometres. Lane kilometres include all lanes in both directions, as well as turning lanes. View our winter storm guidelines to see a timeline of the snow-clearing process. In order to help us clear the roads effectively, please follow Clarington's by-law regarding vehicle operation. The by-law is applicable year round.
To help serve you better and provide more efficient service, we’ve launched Service Clarington — a new online customer portal. File by-law complaints, report problems, and apply and pay for permits and licences in one convenient place. Get started by visiting service.clarington.net to create an account. What is the Clarington snowplow map? |
The snowplow map is an online, interactive map that shows the progress of Clarington’s snow-clearing operations. You can see in real time (updated every five minutes) where our winter maintenance vehicles have been over the last 24 hours. |
Does the map show where plows are going next? |
No. The snowplow map does not show the exact location of the plow or its route. Instead, it updates every five minutes to show where our winter maintenance vehicles have already been. During a storm, crews may need to leave residential areas to re-plow main roads and emergency routes before coming back to neighbourhood streets. |
How do crews decide which roads to clear first? |
Clarington follows a priority system:
|
Why hasn’t my street been plowed yet? |
If it is still snowing, crews focus on keeping main roads open. Residential streets are cleared once the snow has stopped or when primary routes are under control. Please check the snowplow map before submitting a service request. |
Will this tool replace the ability to submit a service request if I think my road has been missed? |
No, but it will help you see if the plow is in your neighbourhood or if your street has already been serviced before submitting a service request. If the map shows your road hasn’t been plowed within the expected timeframe, you can still submit a service request at www.clarington.net/ServiceClarington. |
Can I access the snowplow map on my phone? |
Yes! The map works on mobile devices, so you can check it on the go. |
