Clarington, Ontario – The Municipality of Clarington is improving accessibility across the community with the installation of adult change tables at three recreation facilities and upgrades at a fourth. The initiative is made possible thanks to a $33,500 grant from the 2024-25 Inclusive Community Grants Program, funded by the Government of Ontario and the Ministry for Seniors and Accessibility.
“We’ll always be working to remove the barriers that stop people with disabilities from fully taking part in our community. By adding these new adult change tables, we’re making it possible for even more residents to safely use our spaces with comfort and dignity. Thanks to the Ontario government for their generous support of these upgrades,” said Clarington Mayor Adrian Foster.
Adult change tables are a vital but often overlooked accessibility aid. These stations provide a safe, dignified, and accessible space for assisted changing—ensuring that more residents and caregivers can participate fully in community life, comfortably and confidently.
“Adult change tables are more than just infrastructure—they are dignity in action. This initiative ensures that people with disabilities and their families can fully participate in public life without compromise or exclusion,” said Clarington’s Accessibility Advisory Committee Chair Lesley Scherer.
Change tables have been installed at the Courtice Community Complex, Alan Strike Aquatic and Squash Centre, and Garnet B. Rickard Recreation Complex. The universally accessible change stall at the Diane Hamre Recreation Complex has also been upgraded with a power door opener and emergency alarm.
Clarington is committed to enhancing accessibility across the community. Mayor Adrian Foster is joined by Councillor Ward 4 Margaret Zwart, Regional Councillor Wards 3 and 4 Willie Woo, Councillor Ward 2 Lloyd Rang and municipal staff, along with Todd McCarthy, MPP for Durham and members of Clarington’s Accessibility Advisory Committee to celebrate this important step forward in removing barriers.
Supporting comfort, dignity, and inclusion—adult change tables help more residents fully engage in community life.
“Through the Inclusive Community Grants Program, we are helping break down barriers and create more inclusive spaces. We are honoured to support the Municipality of Clarington’s initiative, which will open new opportunities for all to participate in community recreational programs,” said Raymond Cho, Minister for Seniors and Accessibility.
This initiative supports the goals of Clarington’s 2024–28 Multi-Year Accessibility Plan and reflects the Municipality’s commitment to providing barrier-free programs, services, and spaces for all residents.
“Supporting the independence and dignity of our Seniors is among the top priorities of our Ontario Government. This Inclusive Community Grant is yet another practical example of our strong support for Seniors,” said Todd McCarthy, MPP for Durham.
The Municipality of Clarington is actively pursuing valuable external funding opportunities, reducing dependency on the property tax base while supporting the delivery of meaningful municipal services.
The Municipality of Clarington extends sincere thanks to the Government of Ontario for supporting this important initiative and helping to build a more inclusive future for everyone.
