Today, the Municipality of Clarington marked the official opening of its Veterans’ Crosswalk at the intersection of King Street and Temperance Street in Bowmanville.
“This is a powerful tribute to those who have served and sacrificed for our country. It will be an important route to the cenotaph during Remembrance Day parades, and all year round it will remind us to appreciate the peace and safety our veterans secured for us,” said Clarington Mayor Adrian Foster. “Clarington’s commitment to honouring our veterans is something we can all be proud of.”
The new crosswalk serves as a lasting tribute to the men and women who have served — and continue to serve — our country. It’s a visible reminder of the respect and gratitude our community holds for Canada’s veterans. As part of the ceremony, Mayor Foster invited members of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 178 and veterans in attendance to take a symbolic “first walk” across the crosswalk.

“The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 178 is proud to partner with the Municipality of Clarington on this important project,” said Alan Haward, President of Royal Canadian Legion Branch 178. “This crosswalk stands as a lasting symbol of remembrance and recognition for all who have served. We thank the Municipality and the community for their continued support of our veterans.”
Following the ceremony, Clarington Council raised the Poppy Flag at Veterans’ Square, marking the official launch of the Royal Canadian Legion’s annual Poppy Campaign in support of local veterans.
The Veterans’ Crosswalk is located just south of Veterans’ Square (40 Temperance Street) in Bowmanville, an area that already serves as a gathering place for remembrance ceremonies and civic pride.
