Clarington, Ontario – As we mark Emancipation Day, Clarington Mayor Adrian Foster has issued the following statement.
“On Emancipation Day, we commemorate the abolition of slavery. This day is a reminder of a shameful chapter in our history, the injustices endured by people of African descent and the intergenerational impact of slavery.
It’s a time to recognize the courage of those who fought against slavery and to celebrate the Slavery Abolition Act, which came into effect in 1834 and marked a turning point toward freedom for many here and throughout the British colonies.
Today and every day, emancipation has been pivotal in shaping the values of respect, freedom, and equality that define our community and our country. In Clarington, we’re proud to live in a welcoming, caring, and diverse community that’s committed to standing against hate, systemic racism, and discrimination.”
