This winter, it’ll be easier than ever to stay up to date on snow-clearing operations thanks to Clarington’s new online snowplow tracking map. Residents can now watch the progress of snow-clearing operations in real time as our crews work around the clock to keep our roads safe and clear.
“If you plowed snow all the way from Courtice to Quebec City and back, that’s fewer kilometres of roads than our crews tackle in Clarington each time it snows. With our handy new snowplow tracking map, you can see the work our teams put in, check if the roads near home are freshly plowed, and make sure you’re set for safe winter driving. We’ll be ready for a true Canadian winter,” said Clarington Mayor Adrian Foster.
Using GPS technology, the snowplow map updates every five minutes, providing real-time information on where maintenance vehicles have been in the last 24 hours. The easy-to-read, colour-coded map shows when a road has been plowed, salted, or both—making it simple for residents to follow snow removal efforts across the community. As part of this project, staff also optimized snowplow routes to improve efficiency and reduce duplication, helping crews clear roads more effectively during winter events.
It’s important to note that Clarington clears roads on a priority basis. Main roads and emergency routes are cleared first to keep traffic moving safely. Once those are safe and passable, crews move into residential neighbourhoods and side streets. During a snowfall, crews may need to return to primary routes before completing neighbourhood streets.
The Municipality is encouraging residents to check the snowplow tracking map before submitting a service request for a missed road. Winter maintenance is a huge operation, and our crews often work around the clock in difficult conditions. By checking the snowplow map, residents can see the progress for themselves, understand why some roads are cleared before others, and get peace of mind that their street is on the list. It’s part of our ongoing commitment to improving transparency, communication, and providing the best possible service to our community.
This project supports the community-informed Clarington 2024–27 Strategic Plan, advancing action L.3.2: Identify, establish and report on service levels of interest to the community—specifically the commitment to optimize snow-clearing routes and provide public tracking.
