Clarington, Ontario — Clarington Emergency & Fire Services (CEFS) welcomed a $21,865 grant from the Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation of Canada. As Station 1 (Bowmanville) expands into a two-truck hall to better serve the community, the funding enabled the addition of a new gear extractor unit.
Gear extractors are specialized systems that remove harmful substances from bunker gear after exposure to smoke, chemicals, and other fire-related debris. This brings the total to five gear cleaning systems now in place across CEFS stations. The extractor aligns with best practices outlined in Ontario’s firefighter cancer prevention checklist and industry best practices, underscoring Clarington’s commitment to health and safety.
“Clarington’s fire crews are hometown heroes, always looking out for us. It’s great to welcome more folks to the team that protects our growing community, and we really appreciate the Firehouse Subs Foundation helping us keep the crews safe,” said Clarington Mayor Adrian Foster.

Brave hearts deserve strong protection—this new gear cleaning equipment is one more way we stand behind our firefighters.
This investment supports Clarington’s growing population by ensuring firefighters have the tools and infrastructure to respond safely and effectively. It follows one of the Municipality’s largest volunteer recruitment efforts in recent years and comes ahead of construction of a new firefighter training facility in Bowmanville—reinforcing Clarington’s commitment to modern, well-equipped emergency services.
“We're proud to give back to Clarington Emergency and Fire Services and provide them with this much-needed equipment. Supporting hometown heroes is at the forefront of everything we do, and we're proud to partner with CEFS to give back to their community,” said Robin Peters, Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation of Canada Executive Director.
The Municipality of Clarington is actively pursuing valuable external funding opportunities, reducing dependency on the property tax base while supporting the delivery of meaningful municipal services. Clarington thanks the Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation of Canada for its continued support in helping safeguard the health and well-being of first responders.
