Clarington Mayor Adrian Foster has released the following statement in honour of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.
“Today is a day for remembrance, reflection and action. When we look back at Canada’s history, we have to face the difficult truths of the residential school system, which, for more than a century, tore Indigenous children away from their families, their communities, and everything familiar. So many traditions, languages, and stories were lost. We are committed to honouring the survivors and remembering the children who never returned home.
National Day for Truth and Reconciliation isn’t just about looking back at our shared history; it’s also a day for action and taking steps forward. Here in Clarington, we’re committed to walking this path toward reconciliation with Indigenous communities. If we want a future filled with hope, we need to work together, building it on respect, understanding, and justice.”
