Clarington Mayor Adrian Foster has issued the following statement in honour of Remembrance Day.
“Today, we wear poppies over our hearts to keep the memory of our veterans close and honour their service and sacrifice. We remember the brave men and women who served in Canada’s military in times of war, military conflict and peace.
Remembrance is not passive, it is a call to vigilance. We have been warned: lest we forget. Lest we forget what led to war – hatred, division, and indifference, used to breed conflict. Lest we forget the cost of peace – the lives lost to protect democracy, human rights, and the dignity of all people. And lest we forget our responsibility as citizens and neighbours, to ensure that the mistakes of the past are never repeated. Remembrance is not just about looking back. It is about looking forward with resolve.
Our community proudly honours our responsibility to the fallen and to those who serve today. You will see hundreds of neighbours gathered together at Remembrance Day ceremonies in Clarington. Last year, we celebrated the renovated Veterans’ Square around the Bowmanville Cenotaph, and now we have our very first Veterans’ Crosswalk. Every day, these important tributes remind us all to cherish the peace and safety we enjoy here in Clarington. Lest We Forget.”
