Clarington, Ontario — Shelter dogs in Clarington now have twice the space to run, play, and enjoy the outdoors thanks to a $50,000 grant from the Marilyn Neaves Charitable Foundation Trust. Completed this summer, the expansion doubled the size of the dog run from one individual-use area to four secure outdoor zones, now complete with shade canopies.
This upgrade supports the health and well-being of animals awaiting adoption. With more consistent access to fresh air and exercise, dogs experience reduced stress and improved socialization, helping them transition more smoothly into future homes.
“The dogs and puppies in our shelter aren’t just animals, they’re someone’s future pet. We want to give them lots of space to play outside and the best possible care while they wait to become part of their new families,” said Clarington Mayor Adrian Foster. “Thank you to the Marilyn Neaves Charitable Foundation for their generous grant. It’s bringing so much joy to the dogs in our shelter.”
Mayor Adrian Foster, Council Members, and staff are joined with Ashley Thompson from the Marilyn Neaves Charitable Foundation Trust at the newly expanded dog run at Clarington Animal Shelter, where dogs now enjoy four secure outdoor zones — double the space they had before.
More room to play and stretch means happier days and happier dogs. Shade canopies keep playtime cool while staff make sure every pup gets regular outdoor time.
Shelter staff are deeply committed to the comfort and care of every animal. Their dedication, along with support from municipal teams who assisted with site improvements, helped bring this project to life. The expanded space is already making a noticeable difference in the dogs’ daily experience.
The Municipality of Clarington is actively pursuing valuable external funding opportunities, reducing dependency on the property tax base while supporting the delivery of meaningful municipal services. Clarington is especially grateful to the Marilyn Neaves Charitable Foundation Trust for its generous 2024 grant, which has made a lasting impact on the shelter’s ability to provide quality care and reflects Clarington’s commitment to animal welfare.
Grants and donations like this help improve the lives of animals at the shelter. They support everything from daily essentials and veterinary costs to facility upgrades and enrichment, ensuring each animal receives safe, compassionate care.
