Be aware of unpaid parking ticket scam

We have been made aware of a recent scam in the area where residents are receiving text messages and emails from the Municipality about outstanding parking tickets, requesting they pay the outstanding fees online.

The Municipality of Clarington does not provide communications about outstanding parking tickets via text or email. If you receive one, do not click on the link and do not provide any personal or financial information. If you’re unsure about whether your parking ticket is legitimate, please contact 905-623-3379 ext. 2105.

Unfortunately, online scams like these are becoming more prevalent and as a community, we urge you to be vigilant when receiving online or phone communications. Durham Regional Police Service provides several resources and tips on protecting yourself and others against fraud. Tips include:

  • Never provide personal information to anyone over the phone unless you have confirmed their identity
  • Change your passwords frequently
  • Never send money, gift cards or cryptocurrency to someone you don't know
  • Share your story with others - your family, friends, neighbours, and any seniors you know as they are often targeted by fraudsters
  • Utilizing 211 before reacting to any requests

You can report scams like these to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.

If you believe you have been a victim of fraud, you can report it online.

Thank you to those who have reported this concern to help keep our community safe.
