Clarington Mayor's statement on Emancipation Day

Clarington Mayor Adrian Foster has issued the following statement.

“On Emancipation Day, we reflect on the painful history of slavery in Canada and its intergenerational impact on people of African descent. We commemorate the Slavery Abolition Act, which came into effect on August 1, 1834, paving the way toward freedom for many here and throughout the British colonies. However, we recognize that the struggle for equality did not end with emancipation.

Emancipation Day is also an opportunity to honour the resilience, contributions and leadership of Black communities – both past and present. We recognize the courage of those who fight for freedom, justice, and equity. Today, we celebrate those who stand against systemic racism, discrimination, and hate. The Clarington I’m proud to live in is a diverse community, where everyone belongs.”
