Clarington’s turf sports have a new home with the opening of the Bowmanville Community Complex dome

Clarington opened the doors to a new era of sport and recreation on Saturday, October 3, as residents stepped inside the Bowmanville Community Complex dome for the first time. Less than a year and a half after breaking ground in May 2025, the Open House celebrated a major milestone for Clarington's first new recreation centre in nearly 20 years, with many more amenities still to come.

A major win for Clarington’s turf-sports community 🏆

Residents got their first chance to explore the new FIFA-sized multi-sport dome, with approximately 1,700 people coming to celebrate throughout the afternoon. As some of the first to play on the new turf, visitors enjoyed family-friendly games and activities, got their steps in on the three-lane indoor walking track and signed up for fun new programs.

Darlington Soccer Club, the Clarington Baseball Association and the Clarington Knights Football Association joined the festivities, giving residents a look at how the new space will support local athletes. The dome provides a year-round place to play, more opportunities to host tournaments at home, and more space to support player development.

Parents and athletes will especially appreciate that the dome's premium indoor turf eliminates traditional rubber crumb infill, meaning no more black pellets coming home in shoes, socks and sports bags. The FIFA-recommended playing surface is designed for traction, durability and safety while supporting soccer, football, rugby, lacrosse, baseball, softball, cricket, ultimate frisbee, dryland training and more.  Beyond the field, a three-lane, 370-metre walking track surrounds the dome, making it easier for residents of all ages to stay active indoors year-round. Get track access and more with our new Swim, Skate and Walk membership.

Fun fact! At 100,000 square feet, the dome is approximately four times larger than the former Bowmanville Indoor Soccer Centre, creating a premier space for local athletes that matches the talent and passion of our community.

This is just the beginning ✨

There’s still lots to look forward to at the Bowmanville Community Complex. Once complete, the facility will span more than 172,000 square feet and be Clarington’s largest recreation destination, bringing sport, fitness, swimming, skating and community programming together in one place. And with Clarington Fields right next to it, even more places to play are just steps away.

Still to come:

  • Two FIBA-sized multi-sport courts for basketball, volleyball, pickleball, badminton, tennis and more.  🏀
  • Flexible program spaces for fitness classes, children's programs, community events and activities. 🤸
  • Durham Region's first outdoor refrigerated skating trail, which will transform into a space for events and community gatherings during warmer months. ⛸️
  • An inclusive playground, splash pad, gazebo and seating areas designed for family fun and connection. 💦
  • The reopening of Clarington's only outdoor lacrosse bowl, giving athletes a dedicated space for box lacrosse, ball hockey and active play. 🥍
  • An Aquatics Centre featuring a six-lane, 25-metre lap pool and a large warm-water pool for lessons, fitness and family swims. 🏊
  • A nearly 2,000-square-foot fitness and dance studio with wood sprung flooring and a ballet barre for movement, fitness and wellness programs. 🩰

The project is supported in part by a $10-million grant from the Province of Ontario through the Community Sport and Recreation Infrastructure Fund (CSRIF).
