Statement from Mayor Adrian Foster on Indigenous Veterans Day

In honour of Indigenous Veterans Day, Clarington Mayor Adrian Foster has issued the following statement.

“Today, we remember the thousands of First Nations, Inuit and Metis veterans who served in Canada’s military. They protected our nation with courage and resilience, yet were excluded from Remembrance Day observances at the National War Memorial until 1995. Despite their service, many Indigenous veterans faced systemic discrimination and injustice – both during and after their time in uniform. On Indigenous Veterans Day, we must ensure their brave service and sacrifice are properly recognized in Clarington and across the country. With profound gratitude, we must make the conscious decision to keep their stories and memories alive.”
