Statement from Mayor Foster on Darlington Unit 4

Clarington Mayor Adrian Foster has issued the following statement.

“Today, we’re celebrating another extraordinary milestone at the Darlington Nuclear Generating Station. With Unit 4 now operating at full power – 142 days ahead of schedule and $150 million under budget – our community is once again at the centre of one of Ontario’s greatest energy achievements. Completing the final phase of refurbishment nearly five months early is a remarkable accomplishment, and one that speaks volumes about the skill and dedication of the people behind it.

Projects of this scale succeed because thousands of individuals bring their best every day. From trades and technical teams to engineers, planners, and Canadian suppliers, the workforce behind Darlington has demonstrated what our community has long known: when the eyes of the world are on Clarington, we deliver. Their effort has helped complete the world’s largest nuclear refurbishment – an achievement that will strengthen our province’s power system for decades.

This moment also highlights Clarington’s unique role in Ontario’s energy future. Darlington is not only keeping reliable, clean electricity on the grid, it is driving innovation, attracting investment, and creating opportunities for families and businesses right here at home. Whether through isotope production, the development of Small Modular Reactors, or emerging research partnerships, our community continues to be a place where the future of nuclear energy takes shape.

To everyone who contributed to this milestone: thank you. Your work has reinforced Clarington’s leadership in nuclear excellence on the world stage. We look forward to continuing to support this sector as it grows and evolves to provide good jobs and new opportunities for our community.”
