Do I need a permit to erect a tent or group of tents?

You do not need a permit if a tent or group of tents are:

  • Not more than 60 square metres (646 square feet) in aggregate ground area
  • Not attached to a building
  • Constructed more than three metres from other structures

You need a permit if you are erecting a temporary tent that is larger than 60 square metres (larger than 646 square feet) or closer than three metres (10 feet) to a building.

The following are the specific requirements to obtain a permit:

  1. Site plan showing location of tent and the distance to any nearby structure.
  2. Drawings from the tent manufacturer including dimensions and specifications of tent material and if the tent is occupying an area greater than 225 square metres, an engineer must stamp the drawing.
  3. Interior floor plan, showing location of tables, chairs, and any fixtures as well as the location of any cooking facility.
  4. Material certificate that material complies with CAN/ULC S-109-M or NFPA 701 Standard.
  5. Clearance from flammable material - The ground enclosed by the tent and not less than 3 metres outside the tent structure must be cleared of all flammable or combustible material or vegetation that can carry fire.
  6. The application must state that it is a temporary tent, including the date the tent will be erected, the date of removal, and described use.
  7. Fee payment of $155.76 per tent for up to two temporary tents.
  8. Subject to approval by the Fire Department. An inspection may be required for any tent more than >30m2 and less than <60m2. For more information, contact Clarington Emergency and Fire Services at 905-623-5126.
