Heritage Incentive Grant Program
Heritage properties are often in need of maintenance and restoration. The Municipality offers a Heritage Incentive Grant Program to assist owners with the cost of repairs and restoration. Clarington offers up to 50 per cent of the costs per building, a maximum of $6,000 per property, including a maximum of $4,000 for exterior work, or $2,000 for interior work.
Applicant
- Must be the registered owner(s) of the designated heritage property.
Eligible work
Eligible projects covered by the grant include:
- Conservation of existing heritage elements listed in the designating by-law;
- Reconstruction of existing heritage features beyond repair or conservation;
- Accurate reproduction of significant features which no longer exist, but for which clear documentation is available;
- Works necessary to restore the building to structural soundness;
- Repair of mortar (exterior);
- Other improvements of a similar nature, at the discretion of the Deputy CAO, Planning and Infrastructure Services
Requirements
- The proposed improvements must qualify as eligible work as outlined in Eligible Works above. ⬆️
- The applicant must submit a complete application, along with an application for Alteration under the Ontario Heritage Act (where required), a description of the eligible works, colour photos of the current state of heritage features to be improved, drawings or photos of proposed improvements, and a minimum of two quotes from qualified contractors.
- The applicant must submit acceptable payment proof (an invoice indicating paid in full or a detailed handwritten receipt) and photos of completed work.
Additional information
- Priority will be given to applications that address designated heritage features.
- Property owners must not be in arrears of property taxes at the time of the application and at the time of issuance of the approved grant.
- The owner is obligated to maintain the improvements to the Municipality's satisfaction.
- Future modifications that change the integrity of the improvements are subject to the approval of the Municipality.
Apply for a Heritage Incentive Grant
- Consult with the Municipality and contractors.
- Submit grant application and application for Heritage Alteration permit (where required).
- Municipal staff may request an inspection of the building.
- Municipal staff may issue a conditional Approval of the grant.
- Municipal staff may issue the grant upon completion of work, providing paid invoices and photos of work, and successful inspection by Municipal Staff.
