    Council bids farewell to MP Erin O’Toole

    The Honourable Erin O’Toole, Member of Parliament for Durham, offered his final federal update at the June 26 Council meeting. After more than 10 years of representing the community, MP O’Toole resigned his seat in June.

    Clarington buys sidewalk snow-clearing equipment

    Council awarded the contract to purchase five new tractors for arterial sidewalk winter maintenance.Before finalizing the purchase, Public Works staff visited two local municipalities with similar machines in their fleet to evaluate the equipment.

    Orono Parking Study

    Clarington staff will work with members of the Orono Downtown Business Improvement Area to try and find a solution for concerns about the capacity of on-street parking.

    Council requested that the parking demand data in downtown Orono be updated, and Public Works staff completed updated parking counts on several dates between late February and mid-April.

    Bowmanville boat launch repair contract awarded

    Clarington Council has awarded the contract to reconstruct the Port Darlington Boat Launch and parking lot in Bowmanville.

    The work includes the reconstruction of the boat launch, a new staircase from the parking lot to the ramp, reconstruction of the parking lot, repairing the grading transition on a segment of the Waterfront Trail, and landscaping improvements.

    Clarington Mayor Adrian Foster thanked Durham MP Erin O’Toole for his service as our Member of Parliament. The Honourable MP O’Toole recently announced that after more than 10 years, he would resign his seat in June.

    Council supports call for new school in Newcastle

    The Municipality of Clarington supports the local school board’s funding request to the Ministry of Education for a new Kindergarten-to-Grade 12 school in Newcastle.

    Due to over-capacity issues at the elementary school in Newcastle, the Kawartha Pine Ridge District School Board has decided to move younger students to the Pines Senior Public School on Highway 35/115.

    Council comments on Bill 23, More Homes Built Faster Act

    Clarington Council made several comments to the Province on the changes in the More Homes Built Faster Act, 2022. Council noted that the changes would significantly reduce municipal collections from developers for critical infrastructure, such as roads and parks.

    Rethinking economic development: Clarington to create a plan moving forward

    Council has adopted, in principle, a new Economic Development Strategy that will help guide the Municipality as it plans for future growth and development in Clarington. The Strategy is rooted in the objectives for economic development set out in Clarington’s Official Plan, recognizing the need to consider various key factors when planning community development and growth.

    Council votes to donate money to help build Durham Hospice Clarington

    To help offset rising construction costs, Clarington Council voted to approve a $200,000 donation to support Durham Hospice Clarington as it fundraises to build a nine-bed hospice on Cobbledick Road in Newcastle at a two-acre site donated by the Municipality. Council heard from the Chair of Durham Hospice Clarington about the struggle to move forward with the project in a cost-effective way since building costs have increased by.
