Inclusion Services

We strive to create an all-inclusive environment where people of all abilities can participate in our programs and services. Our aim is to provide a fun, accessible, and supportive environment for all. To create a successful program experience, we offer Inclusion Support and Inclusion Programs.

Inclusion Support

Within our Inclusion Support model, we try to accommodate individuals with various special needs, including intellectual or physical disabilities, behavioural challenges, vision and hearing impairments or medical conditions that prevent participation in a program or service without additional support.

Assessing a participant's need for support

When assessing whether additional support is needed, please consider the following:

  • Is extra support required at school?
  • Is extra help needed at home for basic care?
  • Is there an existing disability that affects mobility, communication, comprehension, social interaction, behaviour, and/or safety?
  • Does the participant have difficulty participating independently in a group setting?
  • Does the participant have a regard for their own safety or an understanding of danger?

If you answered yes to any of the questions above, please review the support options below.

Please note: Families who fail to disclose a participant's needs before registration may be required to withdraw from the program. Clarington's refund policy will apply.

How to register for Inclusion Support

Participants who require Inclusion Support register at www.clarington.net/InclusionSupport.

To request Inclusion Support, you must register the participant for the appropriate Inclusion Support activity. These activities are updated with each new program season (requests for spring 2026 must be registered in Inclusion Support - Spring 2026). Participants must also register for the program where support is needed.

If there are any changes to your registration request, email inclusionservices@clarington.net. Changes may not be able to be accommodated, so it is important that you email as soon as possible.

Support is offered on a first-come, first-served basis and depends on staff availability, the participant's needs, and other factors. By registering for Inclusion Support, you are submitting a support request, and support is not guaranteed.

Our Inclusion Services staff will review your request, confirm via email whether support is available, and provide you with any next steps required to complete your support request.

To request Inclusion Support in one of our camp programs, you must register in the Inclusion Support activity for the camp, not for the camp itself. These activities can be found at www.clarington.net/InclusionSupport.

There are limited spots available for inclusion support, and support is not guaranteed. If a week of Inclusion Support is full, please add your child to the waitlist. As we work through our staff placements, we will try to open up additional inclusion support spots where possible. Waitlists also help us determine future programming needs.

If a spot becomes available, you will be contacted by email to register by the provided deadline. Please ensure your contact information, including phone number and email address, is up to date on your BeActive account.

Registration from a reserved waitlist spot must be completed in person at one of our recreation facilities and cannot be completed online or over the phone. Inclusion Support activities for camps will close two weeks before the program start date.

Individuals requiring support who do not register in the applicable Inclusion Support program must provide an External Support Worker. Support persons and external support workers are welcome in all of our camp programs.

Please note that registration in an inclusion support program does not guarantee that your child will receive one-on-one support or that the support will always be provided by the same staff member. We base our staff placements on the needs of your child and the other participants at the same location. Oftentimes, this allows us to use a shared-support model.

We do not provide Inclusion Staff Support in our drop-in programs. Participants who need support for these programs may attend with their own support person at no additional cost.

Inclusion Support Staff

Participants with approved support requests will receive support from Inclusion Staff at no extra cost.

These staff members are trained in adapting activities and behaviour management and are certified in

  • Standard First Aid and CPR C
  • Automated External Defibrillation
  • HIGH FIVE Principles of Healthy Child Development
  • Behaviour Management Systems

They are typically students and do not provide the same level of support as behaviour therapists or educational assistants. Inclusion staff do not provide medical, therapeutic, or one-to-one behavioural support. If our inclusion staff are unable to meet your participant’s needs, an external support worker will be required.

Inclusion staff can provide support through

  • Adapting program activities and instructions
  • Helping redirect the participant to promote safety
  • Offering sensory, emotional, or body breaks as needed
  • In programs over three hours in length, inclusion staff can also provide support with some aspects of personal care and activities of daily living. For more information, please contact inclusionservices@clarington.net.

Inclusion Programs

Inclusion programs are created specifically for participants with disabilities and diverse needs. These programs are facilitated by our Inclusion Staff to provide a higher level of flexibility, support, adaptations, and promote independence and success. Adaptations may include changes to activities, instructions, materials, program pacing, and more.

Participants can register directly for our Inclusion Programs. Participants will be required to contact Inclusion Services to submit an Inclusion Support Request Form so staff can understand their needs and plan appropriate support.

New Inclusion Programs are being developed. If there are inclusion programs you hope to see in the future, please contact inclusionservices@clarington.net to let us know.
