Clarington Sports Hall of Fame

The Clarington Sports Hall of Fame is a year-round display of Clarington’s athletic achievements hosted in Garnet B. Rickard Recreation Complex.

With the generous support of our local sponsors, Votorantim Cimentos St Marys and Ontario Power Generation, we have honoured 92 outstanding individuals and teams since the awards’ inception in 2003.

Starting in 2025, the Clarington Sports Hall of Fame Induction Committee will be inducting athletes as applications are received and reviewed. This means that inductions will occur when nominations of great significance are submitted, allowing us to focus on the most remarkable contributions to our sports community.

Categories and criteria

The selection committee values the qualities of upstanding character and integrity and reserves the right to reject nominations based on moral, criminal or ethical grounds.

To be considered for selection in the Athlete category, a nominee must have:

  • Demonstrated outstanding achievement in their athletic field of endeavour or displayed above-average proficiency in a number of sports over a period of time.

OR

  • Brought honour and fostered pride in the Municipality of Clarington through their athletic achievements.

An Athlete must have been out of active competition in their acknowledged sport for a minimum of three years or be at least 50 years old.

Competition may be at the local, regional, provincial, national, international or professional level.

To be considered for selection to the Builder category, a nominee must have:

  • Demonstrated consistently outstanding commitment and leadership to athletics or sports as an official (referee, umpire, etc.), executive, trainer, coach, administrator, teacher or supporter, over an extended time.

A Builder may be active or inactive at the time of selection.

To be considered for selection to the Team category, a nominee must have:

  • Represented a local entity within the Municipality of Clarington
  • Achieved distinction at the provincial, national, or international level or reached the ultimate level of distinction in their sport.

A Team is defined as two or more athletes competing together as a unit in the same sport (i.e. Pairs figure skaters would be a team, a boxer and their manager would not constitute a team).

A Team must be out of active competition in its acknowledged sport for a minimum of five years.

The selection committee reserves the right to acknowledge significant events or achievements in the local athletic and sports community which may not otherwise fall into one of the other categories for the Clarington Sports Hall of Fame through the Honorary category.

This initiative aims to spotlight remarkable athletes and teams who have demonstrated excellence in their sporting pursuits or significantly contributed to fostering a positive and inclusive sports environment within our community.
