Residential schools were government-sponsored religious schools that operated across Canada for over 160 years until the 1990s. Their purpose was to assimilate Indigenous children into Euro-Canadian culture. More than 150,000 Métis, Inuit and First Nation children were forcibly taken from their families and communities, and tragically, many of these children never made it back home.
The effects of the abuse and mistreatment at residential schools continue to be felt by subsequent generations through intergenerational trauma.
