Go East Clarington: Bowmanville Extension
Metrolinx to introduce train service to Bowmanville
Metrolinx has awarded the major construction contract for the Bowmanville Extension, which will expand GO rail service farther into Durham Region.
The project will add 18.7 kilometres of new track to the Lakeshore East Line, extending service from Durham College Oshawa GO Station to the future site of Bowmanville GO Station.
Once complete, the Bowmanville Extension will provide frequent, reliable service while reducing travel times to Union Station by 15 minutes. Riders can expect train service every half hour during peak periods, hourly during off-peak periods and every two hours on weekends.
The Bowmanville Extension will strengthen regional transit connections by supporting nearly 17,000 daily trips and 4.9 million annual boardings by 2041.

Clarington’s Major Transit Station Areas
Clarington has long supported GO Train expansion to Courtice and Bowmanville, aligning land use planning through the recently adopted Courtice Transit-Oriented Community and the draft Bowmanville West Urban Centre and Major Transit Station Area Secondary Plans.
Development of both Secondary Plans will rely on a robust, well-connected transit network to thrive. These new community areas are planned to accommodate more than 25,000 housing units in a range of densities, along with office, commercial, and industrial uses designed to capitalize on future transportation access provided by the Bowmanville Extension.
Courtice Transit-Oriented Community Secondary Plan (Adopted)
In December 2025, Council adopted the Courtice Transit-Oriented Community (CTOC) Secondary Plan – a bold, long-term vision for a mixed-use, transit-supportive community centred on the future Courtice GO Station.
This area will evolve over the next several decades to include a diverse range of housing with a mix of densities and affordability to meet the needs of people at all stages of life. The adopted plan also includes eight new schools, 13 new public parks, and office space, commercial, and industrial uses that will create over 8,000 employment opportunities.

Bowmanville West Urban Centre and Major Transit Station Area Secondary Plan (Draft)
The draft Bowmanville West Urban Centre and Major Transit Station Area is being planned to include a mix of uses centred around the future Bowmanville GO Station.
This area will include a diversity of housing, shopping, and services, along with a connected network of parks, green spaces, and other community amenities. Walkable streets and sustainable design will create a vibrant neighbourhood where young families and older adults will enjoy living and working. Improved cycling and pedestrian opportunities will enhance community connections.
The new GO Train station and the related development are key drivers of responsible growth for this area, enhancing the Bowmanville West Urban Centre's position as the largest commercial hub in Clarington.
