Electric Vehicles

As we work to minimize our greenhouse gas emissions, we know that transportation is one of the biggest contributors to pollution and climate change. Clarington has begun to budget and change its vehicle fleet to low carbon electric vehicles (EVs). Read Clarington’s Green Fleet and Equipment Policy (PDF), which outlines how the Municipality will transition to using more electric vehicles in its fleet where possible.

ChargeHub

Across Canada, there are some 5,000 public charging stations, and that number keeps growing. They can be hard to find, and that's where ChargeHub comes in. ChargeHub is an independent, user-verified map, which shows and tracks the locations and operating status of every registered public charging station across North America. It provides user feedback on EV stations, built-in navigation features and search filters to help users find public charging stations on their route. You can access ChargeHub online or by downloading the free app from Google Play or the App Store.

Frequently asked questions

Yes. Clarington charges a fee to help offset the costs of charger maintenance and replacement.

There are three ways you can pay for the use of the charge station. You can pay using the ChargeLab app. Just download the app and follow the instructions. You can also pay using a pre-registered RFID card or with your phone by scanning the QR code on the charge station and following the instructions.

Charging rates for EVs are measured in range per hour (RPH) and based on several factors. Typically, level two chargers offered by the Municipality deliver an RPH of 40 kilometres.

EVs can be parked at chargers as long as they are actively charging. You will be billed according to how long you charge your EV. Once your battery reaches a full charge, you are expected to move your car so that someone else can use the station.

Yes, residents may leave their car charging overnight. The Municipality is not responsible for any damages that may occur to private property.

Not necessarily. Look for signs marking public charging stations and those for private charging. As Clarington transitions its fleet to EVs, we will earmark some stations for our use only.

Currently, all public chargers are available on a first-come, first-served basis.
