Lakeshore Road Bluff Erosion and Stabilization Project

Lakeshore Road is closed between Boulton Street and Riley Road in Newcastle as a public safety precaution due to bluff erosion and slope stability concerns identified near the roadway. Existing hard and soft road closures, along with a signed detour route, remain in place.  

The Municipality is actively working with its engineering consultants to develop a coordinated design for drainage improvements and slope stabilization. The design will ensure that any near-term work is compatible with the long-term stabilization of the bluff, minimizing the need for rework. Requirements for monitoring and reopening the road will be determined as the design progresses. 

Please note: Hard road closures block the entire road, preventing motorists, cyclists, pedestrians, and emergency vehicles from passing. Soft road closures allow local traffic to access homes, businesses, or properties up until the point of a hard road closure. 

Current status and next steps 

The Municipality has reviewed preliminary design options and directed its engineering consultant to advance a coordinated design for drainage improvements and slope stabilization. While a reopening date has not yet been confirmed, staff are working as quickly as possible to advance the design and approvals required to begin construction and reopen Lakeshore Road as soon as it is safe to do so.

Public Information Centre  

The Municipality will host an information session for area residents to provide an update on the project, explain the work being advanced, share anticipated next steps, and answer questions. Residents in the area will be notified directly once the date, time, and location are confirmed.
